Many months ago, I was browsing the internet looking for fabric manufactures that I hadn’t really heard of before–doesn’t everyone do this?? Anyway, I don’t know if it was at the Troy Corporation website, but I know it wasn’t at a retailer’s website, I saw fabrics by the artist Marcia Derse. And I was immediately hooked into her wonderful use of color and pattern.
To quote from Ms. Derse’s statement on her website, she starts with “a bolt of muslin, fabric dyes, and the primary colors in silkscreen paints.” The resulting fabrics are full of rich and warm colors with earthy tones and organic shapes and patterns. The colors are vibrant but not false or formulated.
One of my goals on Saturday at Quilt Market was to find the Troy Corporation booth and Marcia Derse’s fabrics. I was just thrilled to find a booth within their larger booth all dedicated to her fabrics. And even better, there was Marcia Derse herself, happy to talk to me and show me her fabrics! She was so nice, and gave me a bit of a tour of her fabrics and even gave me her business card. She also let me take a picture which I told her I wanted to put on my blog, so I’m pretty sure it means I have permission to post these pictures. (I don’t want to post anything I shouldn’t.)
The fabrics in the photo above are from her third collection named “the third in line collection.” I have all of these fabrics coming to my shop in addition to a small collection of solids called “modern texture.” They are not exactly solids, but look more like a hand-dyed fabric. They are in the booth photo and are hanging flat on the wall on the left side–off white, tan and a red fabrics can be seen. I can imagine they would look wonderful in a quilt made of all solids in the style of Cherry House.
I took a few pictures of quilts that I believe were made with free patterns that are or will be available on the Troy Corporation website–the new collection is not up there yet. Troy is the fabric manufacturer. Bob took my order right there at Quilt Market, and it should only be a few weeks before I get these fabrics in the shop.
This quilt was made with the fabrics from the streamline collection, and the free pattern is available at the Troy website. I’m sorry that my photo didn’t turn out better.
This quilt is from the Gerta fabric line and has the free pattern download from the Troy Corporation website as well. Again, not the greatest picture.
I think the quilt hanging up in her booth is one that will be available by free download as well, but I’m not sure. There was a quilt that was not hung up, and that may have been one of the quilts that will be a free pattern to download. Each of her fabric lines so far has had a panel print. In the booth photo, the panel print is hanging on the left–natural colors. The original art quilt it was based on was hanging on the opposite side of the booth, but I didn’t get it in the picture.
I know I haven’t done a very complete job of representing these wonderful fabrics. I don’t have photos of individual fabrics which makes it somewhat difficult. But please visit Marcia Derse’s website and please let me know what you think of her fabrics. I find them immensely appealing and inspiring!
Makes me want to take up quilting!
You don’t quilt? You’d be so good at!! You need a new hobby, right?? 🙂
No new hobbies! I don’t really quilt- I made the handprint one in Mrs. Worthen’s class and have done some basic patchworks ones like that with kids painting squares, but never a truly artistic one. Maybe some day….but I love to look and dream!!
Awesome – I will be stalking your blog until it comes in – I am drooling over this line and intend to buy lots of it!

I love that second quilt. I’ll be interested to see this line although I need fabric like I need a hole in my head.
I’ll try to remember to bring a few of these to the next SMQG meeting if you want so that you can see them in person. They arrived, this week, and I really, really love them. They are so colorful! I just have to get photos and list them in my shop. I’d love to make something with them right away if only I had time–you know how it is, I’m sure. I completely understand about not needing anymore fabric!!
Thanks to Jaybird Quilts for the link! The Gerta fabrics remind me of Malka’s hand-dyed fabrics at Stitch In Dye. Your eye for color and graphic designs is wonderful!!
I love your streamline fabric quilt!!! You make it look so easy! 🙂
I’m glad Jaybird sent me your way! What fabulous taste you have! That “third in the line” collection looks gorgeous!

Jaybird Quilts sent me over from UK and I’m so pleased 🙂 Marcia’s fabrics look so gorgeous – I just want to wrap myself in them and breathe them in!
I loved the Gerta range but didn’t see it in many shops. The quilt using them is beautiful. I’ve come via Jaybirds blog. Thanks for the fabulous giveaway!! You stock a great range of fabrics at very reasonable prices!
