The quilt I am working on (Modern Sweets with Art Gallery’s Sugar collection) is one that I saw on the cover of a magazine and I fell in love with it. I really wanted to make one for myself. It’s a twin size quilt and I don’t have a particular need for that size quilt, but that’s okay.
The quilt top is finally finished. Yay!! I’m planning to give it to a friend who is recovering from surgery. And as I held it up to look at it, I realized it is huge. Not a good size for cuddling up on the couch, which is what I had been imagining for it. After a lot of thinking, I realized that I could cut it up and put it back together in a new way. I could have two lap quilts–one for me and one for my friend.
This is how I decided to cut up the pattern.
The big piece would be the quilt for my friend and it’s the closest to the quilt pattern, just a bit smaller and not as many rows. The others squares that are left would be pieced together into a 3×3 block quilt with the yellow strips between the horizontal rows (I’ll have to put together one more block). I thought about not putting in the horizontal sashing, but I don’t like the fact that there would be a seam that would break up the continuity of the vertical yellow strip. I think that would be odd looking. I may change my mind.
The biggest drawback to cutting up the quilt like this is that the bottom edge of my friend’s quilt and several places of my quilt would not have sharp points at the tips of the triangles. Because I’d be cutting things in half, there is no seam allowance. However, I’m not sure it’s really that big of a deal. What do you think? What would you do?
As to my original question in the title of this post, do you manage to follow patterns? It was unusual for me to make something with the exact fabrics that are in the pattern. But it was the fabrics that made me love this pattern–along with the fact that it had pretty big pieces and would be quick to put together. I’ve come so close to following the pattern. Which is something I rarely do. I’m always adjusting, adding, switching fabrics, making the size different, etc. I’m the same way with cooking.
So, do you follow patterns? I don’t know why I have so much trouble sticking with a pattern and following all the instructions.
